FIRST UPDATE ON NIGER CRISIS: NIGERIAN FEDERAL SENATE REJECTS MILITARY INTERVENTION
Senators representing 19 Northern Nigerian states lobbied their counterparts representing the Southern Nigerian states to refuse permission to President Bola Tinubu to use military force to reverse the military coup in Niger Republic.
The Northern senators argued that their states share a border with Niger Republic and would be affected by a deluge of refugees if military action was taken.
The Senate approved all methods be used to restore constitutional order in Niger Republic, except military intervention. In other words, economic blockade and withdrawal of Nigerian free electricity supply to Niger remains in effect. Large swathes of Niger is in total darkness as Nigeria contributed 70% of the total amount of electric power used in the Francophone country.
In a volte-face, Nigerian military chiefs had a meeting with other military chiefs of ECOWAS member-states and released a statement saying that they no longer think it is a good idea to use force against the Niger junta.
For now, the threat of a war has receded. Diplomatic efforts at trying to get the military junta to stand down continues…
